The kitchen sink is one of the most-used fixtures in your home, and it’s no surprise that it can sometimes become clogged. Instead of reaching for harsh chemicals, try using baking soda to safely and effectively unclog your sink.
What You’ll Need
-1/2 cup baking soda
-1/2 cup white vinegar
-1/4 cup salt
-1 gallon boiling water
1. Pour the baking soda, white vinegar, and salt down the drain.
2. Let sit for 15 minutes.
3. Boil the water and pour it down the drain.
The Baking Soda Method
If your sink (or tub or shower) is full of backed-up water, bail out as much of the water as you can, using a cup and dumping it into a bucket. You want to do this before you start any type of drain-cleaning method because there’s always a chance that the authors’ instructions will send more water your way instead of draining it.
Most clogs can eventually be loosened with some good old-fashioned elbow grease and a plunger (and these are the best plungers), but if that doesn’t do it, you can try one of the following methods.
The Vinegar and Baking Soda Method
If you want to try a less caustic method, mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/4 cup salt and pour it down the drain. This mixture won’t eat away at your pipes like vinegar will, but it will help dislodge any material that’s coating the inside of your drain. Let it sit for 15 minutes before running hot water down the drain to flush everything out.
The Boiling Water Method
If you have a slow-moving drain that you think might be due to a grease clog, the boiling water method is worth a try.
Boiling water can dissolve grease and break up small food particles that are stuck in your drain, which can help to unclog it.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Boil a pot of water and carefully pour it down the drain.
2. Repeat if necessary.
3. Flush the drain with cold water to remove any residue.
The best way to prevent your sink from clogging is to never let anything go down the drain that doesn’t belong there. This means no grease, no coffee grounds, no rice, no pasta, and no flour. Basically, if it’s not water, don’t put it down the drain.
Another way to prevent a clog is to get a hair catcher for your drain. This will stop hair from going down the drain and causing a clog. You should also clean your drains regularly with a good quality drain cleaner.
